Background
Queensland multicultural community leader, ACCESS Community Services, in May 2021 donated a car to Woodridge State High School to support the education, life skills and employment prospects of local young people. The car now supports this new community initiative, Turning Point, to support young drivers in gaining the supervised driving hours required to gain their provisional licence.
The community initiative was announced in May 2021, with the Queensland Treasurer, and state member for Woodridge, the Hon. Cameron Dick MP donating $2,000 to the Woodridge State High School P&C to kick start the initiative for Woodridge SHS students.
The name, Turning Point, illustrates the vision of the initiative as this opportunity, for some young drivers, could be their turning point towards gaining employment and/or participating in further education or training.
Vision
To provide an opportunity to young people within our community to gain their required supervised driving hours to gain their provisional licence to overcome the transportation barrier they may face when seeking employment or further training.
Purpose
A barrier for young people within our community is transportation. This barrier sometimes hinders young people from gaining employment, being able to attend further education and/or training and can be a barrier to providing essentials to their family.
At a time when there is a spotlight on youth crime, with many unfortunate accidents occurring on our streets as a result of young people not being licenced or learning how to drive properly, this initiative also aims to proactively educate young people on the importance of road safety.
Students: How can you get involved?
Woodridge State High School students who would like to get involved in the program firstly need to meet the below eligibility criteria:
- Possess current Queensland Learner's Driving Licence
- Completed a minimum of 10 hours with an accredited driving school, and have these hours logged in their Queensland Learner Logbook app.
Once you have met this eligibility criteria, a booking can be made through administration. Each session costs students $10.00 (lessons subsidised by the WSHS P&C) and goes for an hour and a half (90 minutes). Students meet their qualified driving instructor at Woodridge State High School and complete a pre-session checklist prior to driving.
