Maths Day of Excellence

For one day every term, Woodridge SHS hosts the Maths Day of Excellence for high-achieving students in local primary schools. This term we welcomed five schools – almost 50 students – for a day of challenges centred around algebraic equations.

The first session involved explicit teaching of a reciprocal problem solving process, where students were challenged to predict based on prior knowledge, identify the big question, clarify unknowns, solve the problem and then reflect on their answer. For the next session students were divided into groups and took part in a game show challenge in the Forum – complete with mini-whiteboards and rewards for the winning team.

Thanks must go to Woodridge SS, Woodridge North SS, Burrowes SS, Berrinba SS and Slacks Creek SS for continuing to strengthen our connections with local schools. Thanks must also go to Miss Wickham and her students who prepared hot food for our young guests, Mr Middis who drove the mini-bus again, and to Miss Bale in the IES who efficiently organised mini-whiteboards for the game show challenge.
